Details Riesling cycling route
Day 1: Arrival in Frankfurt
You arrive individually in Frankfurt. Once you've settled into your hotel, you can explore Frankfurt and the surrounding area at your leisure.
Day 2: Heading for the Rheingau
You pedal leisurely along the banks of the Main and through the vineyards. The route starts south of the Main and takes you to the picturesque medieval old town of Höchst. A short excursion to the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate, Mainz, will plunge you into 2,000 years of history. You'll still find Roman ruins and one of the most important domes on the Rhine. On the banks of the Rhine, you'll discover the magnificent Biebrich Castle, a Baroque masterpiece that impresses with its immense castle park. Indulge in a Rhine Riesling tasting along the picturesque waterside promenade in Eltville! (F) 65 km by bike, approx. 6 hours.
Day 3: Nahe wine country
Today, the bike route follows the banks of the Rhine. A short detour takes you to Rüdesheim, a famous World Heritage site. Take the cable car up to the Niederwald monument and enjoy a unique view of the vineyards and Rhine landscape. In the afternoon, explore wine country along the Nahe. (F) 31 km by bike, approx. 2.5 hours.
Day 4: Through the Rheinhessen to Alzey
You're looking at a particularly charming bike route through the Rheinhessen, with many little-known wine villages and a landscape barely touched by tourism. The first few kilometers of the day follow the course of the small Appel stream along the Appelbach-Radweg. From Wöllstein, you follow the Hiwwel Radweg over 1000 hills. In Alzey, you can enjoy the atmosphere of the Rossmarkt, Alzey's "crossroads", over a glass of wine. (F) 40 km by bike, approx. 3 hours.
Day 5: Along the Palatinate Wine Route
From Rheinhessen, Germany's largest wine-growing region, you continue on to the Palatinate, Germany's second largest wine-growing region. Here, you'll follow the magnificent route of the Palatinate Wine Route. Its many famous wine villages will make any wine lover's heart beat faster. In Deidesheim, the largest wine-growing community in the Palatinate, you'll discover charming historic buildings. The Episcopal Palace, with its magnificent castle park and former noble courtyards, is a particular attraction, as is its double staircase. (F) 48 km by bike, approx. 4 hours.
Day 6: Along the Palatinate Wine Route
The peaceful bike route takes you further along the Wine Route to the charming wine village of Rhodt unter Rietburg. Small houses with picturesque courtyards wrapped in vines characterize the face of the village. You can also take a stroll through the charming Villa Ludwigshöhe castle, in the footsteps of King Ludwig I. From here, you have a unique view over the vineyards to the Rhine valley. (F) 25 km by bike, approx. 2 hours.
Day 7: Rhodt to Heidelberg
In the morning, you'll head for the city of Speyer, famous for its important Romanesque cathedral, the largest surviving example of this architectural style in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site! In the center of Schwetzingen, you'll discover the sumptuous castle park. It was created in the 18th century by an Elector of the Palatinate. The fusion of geometric and landscape styles makes it a masterpiece of European garden design. You'll end the day in Heidelberg, a charming town on the Neckar that's well worth a visit in its own right! Its world-famous city panorama at the foot of Heidelberg Castle warrants a detailed tour of the old town and the narrow streets around the Gothic Church of the Holy Spirit. (F) 52 km by bike, approx. 4 hours.
Day 8: Return home
Today's journey ends in Heidelberg. If you wish, you can book a transfer back to Heidelberg. The transfer to Heidelberg departs at 10.00 am. (F) Hotel and program changes are expressly reserved. (F=Breakfast) East German tour.
