Côte d'Azur details - jet set and art

Day 1: Arrival in Cannes

Off to the glittering Côte d'Azur. In our centrally located hotel in Cannes, we first settle in comfortably: La Croisette, the rue d'Antibes with its boutiques, the sea ─ you can reach it all in just a few minutes on foot. (UN)

Day 2: Exotic Eze and seaside villas

The colors, the light and the wide view of the Mediterranean Sea! Today, we're enjoying priceless views of the Côte d'Azur. Via the Moyenne Corniche, we reach the medieval walled town of Eze-Village and the Jardin Exotique with its rare tropical plants. On the Jean-Cap-Ferrat peninsula, we visit one of the most unusual summer residences of the early 20th century - the Ephrussi de Rothschild villa and garden complex. It's easy to see that money was no object here, but Beatrice de Rothschild had great taste. Tip for the rest of the day: It's time to stroll along Cannes' mythical Croisette, the palm-lined, ornate promenade. 150 km (F)

Day 3: Sanary-sur-Mer and German literature

During the long journey, we'll have time to discuss why the philosopher Ludwig Marcuse described the idyllic little port town as the "capital of German literature in exile". It was Thomas Mann who brought many German and Austrian writers to Sanary-sur-Mer after 1933. Let's look around us. We learn that Lion Feuchtwanger and his wife Martha liked to hold salons at the Villa Valmer. We hear that Berthold Brecht sang his satirical songs over a glass of wine in the harbor pubs. We remember Egon Erwin Kisch, Joseph Roth, Franz Werfel and many others... 280 km (F)

Day 4: St-Paul-de-Vence and the birthplace of perfume

An ancient fortification, winding streets, refreshed houses. St-Paul-de-Vence is one of the most beautiful spots in the coastal hinterland. And it has always been a gathering place for artists. We stroll through the town and visit the Fondation Maeght, a perfect symbiosis of architecture and nature (Fondation closed until July 1, 2023. Your guide will put together an alternative program for you). The artistic signatures of two Catalan greats, Josep Lluis Sert and Joan Miró, are undeniable here. Works by Giacometti, Richier and Georges Braque are of the highest order. Matisse designed the Chapelle-du-Rosaire in nearby Vence. At last, the perfume capital of the world! The scent of roses, oranges and jasmine in Grasse. Perfumers have guarded their recipes for centuries. And we know one thing: without the roses of Grasse, there'd be no Chanel No. 1. 5. 140 km (F)

Day 5: Nice, change and art

Today, we mingle with the rich and famous in the Côte d'Azur's premier seaside resort. As early as the 18th century, the nobility and bourgeoisie came to Nice to spend the winter months in the mild climate. Nice has been a legend ever since. We stroll along the Promenade des Anglais towards the architectural and cultural treasures, parks and gardens in the heart of the city. We take a look at the colorful flower market on Cours Saleya and devote ourselves to the suburb of Cimiez villas. At the Musée Chagall, we see a complete collection of 17 major paintings, sculptures, stained glass, mosaics and tapestries, all harmoniously framed in a specially created exhibition building. 100 km (B, D)

The Gambetta Provencal Market offers sales space to around 80 local merchants. Food, flowers and photos are offered.

Day 6: Antibes: Picasso and the Lérinian Islands

Antibes presents itself as pleasantly down-to-earth, relaxed and therefore completely impressed by the villas in the area. You can feel it immediately, for example, when you stroll through the Cours Masséna market. In the Picasso Museum in the former Grimaldiburg, we see the collection of works by the Spaniard, which he painted here in the summer of 1946, freshly in love and in good spirits, and bequeathed to the city. Back in Cannes, we board a boat and visit the Lérinian Islands. 60 km (F)

Day 7: Jet set in St Tropez

It's also St-Tropez: an extraordinary bay, powerful light, powerful colors. No wonder artists and writers have found inspiration here. At the Musée de l'Annonciade, we witness veritable explosions of color in the works of post-impressionist painters, and feel the soul of the place. We drive along the Esterel mountains to Cannes via the Côte d'Azur coastal road. Let's bow our heads and enjoy the colorful interplay of pink granite and turquoise-blue sea! 170 km (F)

Day 8: Principality of Monaco

Today's program includes swimming and strolling. If you feel like it, you can join an optional excursion to Monaco. Disguised as a Franciscan, the first Grimaldi slipped through the city gate in 1297 and overwhelmed the fortress garrison. They've been sitting on their rock ever since, and after the birth of heir to the throne Prince Albert II, the reigning family hopes this won't change in the future. Make the most of this magical place where dreams and reality sometimes merge. Visit the Oceanographic Museum with its hundreds of aquariums, directed by Jacques Cousteau for 30 years, watch the Changing of the Guard and stroll through Monte Carlo. 130 km (F)

Day 9: Return journey

Au Revoir, Côte d'Azur! It's off to the airport and home. If you wish, you can stay a few days longer. (F) Flight, hotel and program changes are expressly reserved. (B=breakfast, D=dinner)
