A gentle breeze scented with acacia and jacaranda trees envelops us as we drive across the vast steppe of Kruger National Park in an all-terrain vehicle, in search of African wildlife such as lions, giraffes and elephants. In St. Lucia, we take a boat trip to observe crocodiles and hippos. On foot, we track rhinos in Eswatini's Hlane National Park. Hiking along the Panoramaroute, we admire high waterfalls and deep canyons. In the Drakensbergen, we discover traditional Zulu huts, and in Lesotho, we meet Basotho people on their horses. We explore the wild coast of Tsitsikamma and make our way to the Cape of Good Hope. The Kilimanjaro massif rises majestically before us, offering a constant view from the little-traveled Kikeleva road. Starting from the dry northern slope near the Kenyan border, we enjoy spectacular views of the peaks and, perhaps, glimpses of wild animals. After crossing moorland to Kikeleva Cave and camping by Kilimanjaro's only lake, we take a relatively easy route to the summit. At Gilman's Point, the reward for our efforts is palpable. Continuing on, we discover lush rainforest to the south, contrasting with the arid north, where lichens and colorful flowers abound.
